Founder Simon Bennett finds himself at the forefront of the woodchopping business, and he couldn’t be happier about it.
Wood Monster, a company specialising in woodchopping machinery and firewood, perfectly aligns with Simon’s expertise and family heritage.
Situated in Majors Creek, a small town in the NSW Southern Tablelands, this family-run operation is fueled by a deep passion for woodchopping and everything related to firewood.
Simon’s father, Len, now 81 years old, holds the title of a retired world champion woodchopper from 1975. Meanwhile, Simon represented New South Wales for 15 years, serving as the captain of his state’s team in competitions against New Zealand on four occasions.
Within the Bennett family, two of Simon’s three children, Madii (27) and Curtis (21), are rising stars in this popular sport. While Simon’s wife Simone and their other daughter Dakota (25) don’t participate in competitions, they provide unwavering support to those who do.
When the family isn’t travelling to participate in Royal Shows across Australia and New Zealand, they operate Wood Monster. Simon established the company this year after more than two decades of independent work.
Wood Monster specialises in wood chop block trimming machines, related equipment, and firewood production.
For over 20 years, Simon has relied on DEUTZ engines for his wood processing machinery, and he intends to continue doing so as he expands the firewood production division.

“I’ve always been fascinated with DEUTZ engines,” he affirms. “Their simplicity and reliability have been exceptional. The 912 series, in particular, perfectly suits my needs.”
Typically, the Bennett family spends up to eight months on the road, participating in competitions. Unfortunately, the pandemic interrupted their schedule, but events have slowly started to resume this year.
At just 21 years old, Curtis, who began woodchopping at the age of 13, currently holds the title of the Australian Under-21 national champion. This year, at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, he triumphed in three events: the 325 mm first division standing block, the 325mm Open underhand, and the 500mm double-handed cross-cut sawing event.
Standing at an impressive 6’5″ (196 cm) and weighing 150 kg, Curtis is a formidable competitor, especially with Len as his coach. “He comes from a long family tradition, which has undoubtedly contributed to his success,” Simon acknowledges.
The Bennett family considers themselves fortunate to have the time to travel and compete in various locations. They hope that things return to normal soon, allowing them to continue pursuing their passion.
Madii has also achieved remarkable success in cross-cut sawing and woodchopping, representing Australia multiple times. She occasionally competes against and even surpasses her male counterparts.
“In the open class, she competes against men in the handicap division,” Simon proudly shares.
Woodchopping is gaining popularity, and as the President of the Australia Axemen’s Association, Simon witnesses major events garnering millions of views on platforms like Facebook.
Simon greatly appreciates his partnership with DEUTZ, as their Business Development Manager – Engine Sales, Ross Harman, has provided invaluable support for his ventures.
This arrangement allows the Bennett family to dedicate their weekends to travelling for competitions after managing the business diligently throughout the week.
“We’ve structured our lives around our sport,” Simon says..
