Ross’s Remarkable Ancestry: An Unforgettable Hobby

Ross Harman boasts blood ties to Sir Donald Bradman, Marilyn Monroe, Katharine Hepburn, and Johnny Depp.

Ross Harman’s family tree reads like a captivating history book, with connections to some of the most iconic figures in the world.

Working as the unassuming Business Development Manager – Engines at DEUTZ Australia, Ross can claim blood ties to not just one, but two Kings of England. On top of that, his lineage includes Australian cricket legend Sir Donald Bradman, as well as Hollywood icons Marilyn Monroe, Katharine Hepburn, and Johnny Depp.

Some of Ross’s famous relatives.

Ross’s passion for tracing his roots spans over 25 years, unearthing a treasure trove of fascinating ancestors. Among the impressive connections, he can proudly call himself a descendant of John Gale, widely recognised as the father of Canberra. Gale, who founded the Queanbeyan Age in 1860, played a crucial role in advocating for Canberra as the superior choice for Australia’s capital.

One notable link on Ross’s maternal side leads back to Edward I, the son of Henry III, who reigned as King of England from 1272 to 1307. Continuing the royal line, Edward II ascended the throne from 1307 to 1327.

While Ross’s mother’s family provides these illustrious connections, he has encountered challenges in tracing his father’s side beyond 1740 due to relatives potentially relocating from counties to Hampshire, making historical records harder to find.

Sir Donald Bradman, Ross’s eleventh cousin, three times removed, adds a sporting touch to the family lineage. However, Ross humbly admits that his cricketing skills did not quite match those of his celebrated cousin. “I love cricket, but I was not as good as my cousin,” he confesses.

To piece together his family history, Ross diligently taps into various resources, including birth, death, and marriage records, as well as websites like ancestry.com.au, familysearch.org, and myheritage.com. Additionally, his connection to movie stars came to light through the BYU Family History Library, a valuable resource that unfortunately has limited access due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

DNA testing has revolutionised the field of genealogy, offering exciting new possibilities for family research. Companies providing DNA testing services can confirm relationships based on genetic samples, opening doors to discoveries and connections.

Ross has also utilised his knowledge and sources to assist others in uncovering their own ancestral roots, finding immense satisfaction in the process. However, he acknowledges that delving into family histories can bring surprises and unveil long-held family secrets.

When his children tie the knot, Ross presents them and their partners with meticulously researched family histories, delving into the rich tapestry of their shared heritage.

“There are so many skeletons,” Ross remarks, emphasising that most are harmless by today’s standards, such as children born out of wedlock. “Everyone has them, and there’s nothing to be afraid of.”

Ross’s hobby not only illuminates his own remarkable ancestry but also inspires others to delve into their own family narratives, creating a deeper appreciation for the captivating tapestry of human history.
