The power rating of a BESS is called kilowatts and refers to how much power can flow into or out of the battery at any given instant.
The amount of electricity the BESS produces is called kilowatt-hours (kWh) and this is the energy rating or battery capacity. Another unit of measurement that may be encountered is megawatt hours (mWh).
1 mWh = 1,000 kWh
If a battery can store 100 kWh of energy it can deliver 100 kilowatts of power per hour. The same battery can deliver 50 kilowatts of power for two hours, or 20 kilowatts of power for 5 hours, or any other computation of the ratio.
The type of BESS employed depends on the application. If the BESS needs to power up and discharge many times in a short duration the system requires a higher power rating.
However, if the BESS is utilised for backup power during grid outages and needs to discharge over longer periods (several hours) the BESS needs to be one with a higher energy rating.
Likewise, the BESS needs to be the correct scale for its application:
- In a residential setting the BESS needs to deliver between 5 kWh to 20 kWh.
- In a commercial setting the BESS energy rating will typically be up to hundreds of kWh.
- In large scale setting, where the BESS provides backup to the main grid, has renewable generation integration and delivers to whole communities, the energy rating can go up to the hundreds of megawatt-hours.
BESS energy ratings can vary widely, which makes computer simulations of proposed systems a valuable tool for designing large-scale applications. Furthermore, energy ratings are still evolving as new and improved technologies are developed. With more large-scale installations occurring as renewable energy generators are integrated with the main grid, the opportunities for study and research are available to aid technological advancement.
DEUTZ New Zealand is in the final stages of developing a new battery storage system that enables the storage of energy generated from renewable sources.
Our BESS is designed with a variety of capacity options, making them suitable for both residential and commercial applications.
They also feature expandable energy storage capabilities to accommodate increased demand. The system can be obtained as part of a DEUTZ microgrid package or seamlessly integrated into an existing setup.
Additionally, our Technical Support Team and authorised dealers are available to provide detailed information and assist in designing a system that specifically meets your requirements.
