What are the uses of BESS?

Microgrid System

Battery energy storage systems have many diverse applications.

Residential and Commercial:

Residential properties can utilise BESS to generate solar energy using photo-voltaic panels integrated with the battery system which provides the ability to store power for later use. This may be particularly useful during power blackouts or more increasingly, for electric vehicle charging at home.

Commercial:

BESS allow businesses to tap into renewable energy sources and store that energy for later use. Management of energy distribution during times of peak demand generates cost savings. BESS offer commercial facilities an insurance against power outages by enabling operations to continue uninterrupted. There may also be revenue opportunities.

Electric Vehicle Charging:

BESS provide solutions for EV charging in remote locations, thereby extending travel for consumers.

Charging can also have an impact on the main grid by increasing power demand at peak times.

A BESS integrated with charging infrastructure for EV both supports the grid and offers charging capacity during off-peak times. With strain on the grid reduced, energy usage is optimised, and costs reduced.

Renewable Energy Integration:

A BESS increases the benefits of renewable energy by ensuring any excess energy that has been generated is stored for later use. Bess integrated with renewables and the main grid provide a balance between generation and distribution, increasing efficiency and sustainability.

Backup Power:

For some sectors, being without electricity supply is highly undesirable. Places like hospitals, emergency services, telecommunications services, military operations, shopping centres and office buildings benefit from a BESS which ensures uninterrupted energy delivery during times of power outages and disruptions. A BESS ensures energy is available at all times.

Microgrids:

As microgrids are integrated at more and more locations, BESS are playing an essential role in supporting the system. By integrating microgrids with the main grid, BESS provide support and reliability. BESS connect the renewable energy sector with the grid, allowing management systems to switch between systems to deliver energy as efficiently as possible.

Peak Shaving and Load Management:

Peak shaving is when a BESS steps in to supply stored energy to the grid when it is experiencing peak demand, thus reducing demand on the main system. By providing support in this way, strain on the grid is reduced, and supply and demand are managed more efficiently.

There are many applications for a BESS and as we head towards a more sustainable future, more will become evident. Each BESS requires individual design, taking into consideration multiple factors, such as load requirements, available energy generation sources, location, regulations and costs, but they will continue to be a major part of future energy solutions

The DEUTZ Australia team has achieved a significant milestone with the successful development of the inaugural DEUTZ Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

This versatile energy storage solution is designed to meet the needs of diverse applications, including both residential and commercial settings.

It caters to a broad range of industries, serving renewable energy providers, industrial electricity consumers, and even offshore drilling companies. We are excited to announce that our BESS is expected to be available for purchase in the fourth quarter of 2023.
