How does a Genset work?

If you need emergency backup power, or have power needs that are off the grid, a Genset is the perfect solution.

Put simply, DEUTZ state-of-the-art generators use diesel or a combination of diesel and solar power to provide a reliable portable electricity source.

DEUTZ understands the challenges presented by the unique landscapes in New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific, so every DEUTZ Genset is tailored to suit the needs of each customer’s specific needs, location and environment.

Gensets can be used for:

  • Standby backup for critical infrastructure
  • Remote locations
  • Festivals
  • Construction sites
  • Off-grid lifestyles

What is a Genset?

A generator set – referred to simply as a Genset – combines and internal combustion engine with an electrical generator (alternator) mounted together to form a single piece of equipment.

It is an electromechanical machine used to convert thermal energy produced by combustion into an AC electrical current through a double-cascade converter: from thermal energy (introduced by diesel fuel) to mechanical energy by means of reciprocating motion (engine rotation) and from mechanical energy to electric energy (rotation of the alternator).

Genset operating modes include:

  • Island mode, where the Genset is the sole source of energy for the user system. Settings include remote locations and construction site equipment
  • Backup power or standby power, when the Genset activates automatically when the existing network fails or is not operating. Settings include hospitals, shopping centres or any industry where continuous operation is imperative
  • Parallel mode, where multiple units work together to ensure power continuity if one fails, the required load is too big for one Genset, or more power is needed at peak times.

How much power do Gensets have?

The electrical power of a Genset can be thought of as physical labour – how much work can I do within a specific amount of time? It is intended as the net power available at the power outlet terminal board, minus the power used by the auxiliary systems essential for its own operation (e.g. cooling fan).

There are two types of electrical power:

Apparent power is the theoretical power absorbed by generator terminals. It is measured in VoltAmpere (VA) and symbolised by a capital ‘S’.

Active power physically transforms into work. It is measured in Watts [W] and symbolised by the capital letter ‘P’.

Genset power ratings include:

COP: Continuous Operation Power. The maximum power a Genset can supply during continuous service in ideal conditions.

PRP: Prime Power. The power a Genset can supply during continuous service over an unlimited number of hours with a variable load in ideal conditions.

LTP: Limited-Time Power. The maximum power a DEUTZ Genset can supply for an operating period, limited to 500 h/year in intermittent mode, or 300 h/year in continuous mode, in ideal conditions.

Genset canopies – covering all bases

DEUTZ Gensets are available in either Open Frame, or Sound-Proof. This Sound-Proof option exceeds industry requirements by using the latest technology and materials. The canopy is made from powder-coated galvanised sheet metal to produce a finish that is durable and will withstand the elements.

Up-to-date technology is available for customised Gensets by incorporating a range of high-tech control panels with cloud-based monitoring systems that can be accessed from a PC, tablet of phone, enabling the user to access the unit’s status and location remotely. This can be upgraded if required.

The DEUTZ Power System Standard Package includes:

  • heavy duty base frame
  • bunded base fuel tank
  • automatic mains fail/remote start control panel
  • visual display of engine and alternator parameters
  • engine monitoring and shutdown system
  • battery charger (AC supply)
  • engine heater (AC supply)
  • engine oil extraction pump
  • operation manual

Options include:

  • extended range fuel tanks
  • 600-litre
  • 800-litre
  • paralleling/synchronising control panel
  • power outlet distribution board.
