A Recon FM-80 mulcher in action, clearing dense Lantana on a roadside in New South Wales. James and Cameron Gray are making waves with their innovative remote-controlled mulcher, designed specifically for the rugged Australian bush.
As the twin brothers and founders of Recon Industries Australia in Newcastle, James and Cameron partnered with DEUTZ engines and FAE Shredding Technologies to create their groundbreaking mulcher.
James describes it as a perfect match, as their radio-controlled machine, named the Recon FM-80 (FM representing Forest Mulcher), shares the innovative and versatile spirit of both Recon and DEUTZ.
Manufactured and designed in Australia, this purpose-built machine is equipped with a DEUTZ BF4L2011 engine, delivering 55 kW/77HP. It can operate in any conditions, including areas inaccessible to regular skid steer machines.
“We manufacture these machines in our Newcastle workshop,” James explains. “They are specifically designed to handle the harsh Australian terrain and extreme temperatures.”
By utilising remote control technology, the FM-80 ensures the safety of operators by keeping them away from dangerous or potentially hazardous situations, such as motorway shoulder clearing.
“The operator can be positioned in a safe location to avoid injuries from collisions with passing traffic,” James adds.
The unique product was developed primarily for the Australian market but holds potential for international expansion. The FM-80 could prove invaluable to local councils, road traffic authorities, and anyone requiring vegetation clearance on uneven ground.
While the development and production of the mulcher have been affected by COVID-19 freight challenges, James has already received some interest and plans to showcase the FM-80 through a roadshow across New South Wales and eventually expand to other states as restrictions ease.
Recon Industries specialises in manufacturing specialised machinery and equipment, including tracked and wheeled loaders and carriers, as well as wheeled airport equipment like electric tugs. The company has contractors stationed across Australia.
James and Cameron, both qualified electrical fitters, serve the niche market of purpose-built mobile machinery. Each project they undertake is customised with meticulous care, creativity, and high-quality parts.
For James, choosing a DEUTZ engine for his latest project was an obvious decision due to their exceptional reliability. He also praises the support received from DEUTZ Australia, including their Business Development Manager for Engines, Ross Harman.
“They are incredibly helpful,” James commends DEUTZ. “They go above and beyond. Their product is reliable, works flawlessly, and carries a strong brand name.”
