Never a dull moment for Max

During the day, Max Torkar assumes the role of a self-proclaimed “bean counter” at DEUTZ Australia. However, on weekends, this Finance and General Manager sheds his brown cardigan and heads to the tennis court or golf course, seeking exhilarating moments outside the office.

Max enthusiastically shares, “I consider myself a proficient tennis player, and I’ve even managed to defeat our club champion, although it turns out he held that title back in 1969!” He adds, “I’m also an active member of the General Rescue team for SES, so don’t be surprised if you witness me rescuing a furry feline from a tricky situation!”

Max’s life has been far from dull. Born in the south of France to Italian and Slovenian parents who sought refuge from communist Yugoslavia, Max’s journey led him to Australia at a young age. He holds deep gratitude for his parents’ resilience, sacrifice, and determination to create a better life for him and his siblings.

Before joining DEUTZ Australia a decade ago, Max gained valuable experience working for KHD Humboldt Wedag, a German engineering company. At DEUTZ, his role is diverse, presenting new challenges on a regular basis.

“My responsibilities span a wide range, from tackling IT issues and ensuring compliance to managing human resources and addressing operational matters,” he explains. “I work closely with our Managing Director, Craig Chamberlin. We share a similar mindset and often find ourselves in agreement. The only topic we might disagree on is who should foot the bill for our weekly Pho soup lunch!”

Food holds a special place in Max’s life. When he makes the long journey to Cologne to visit the parent company, he delights in savouring Kolsche cuisine and indulging in the renowned Pork Knuckles.

Max praises DEUTZ as a remarkable company that genuinely cares for and respects its employees. “The company culture is incredibly healthy,” he remarks. “We have numerous long-term employees, and when they depart, it’s usually due to retirement.”

On a personal note, Max’s life took a beautiful turn when he married his “stunning African Queen” in Zambia back in 2014. The experience was both extraordinary and adventurous, involving unique culinary encounters. “As part of the marriage process, I found myself eating caterpillars while cautiously navigating the presence of wild animals nearby,” he recalls.

The wedding was a joyous occasion, blessed with splendid weather and attended by most of the family. Zambia, a peaceful yet developing country, holds a special place in their hearts, as Max’s wife still has close family ties there. They embrace the opportunity to support and sponsor their loved ones whenever possible.
